In-between is a practice-led communication design research project centred on the concept of liminality. It explores how repeated relocation, temporary dwelling, and movement through urban spaces shape experiences of identity, spatial perception, and belonging. Rooted in my experience of moving between countries and cities and living in temporary situations, the project focuses on “in-between states” between stability and change, arrival and departure, belonging and alienation. It asks: How can communication design translate these abstract experiences into visual forms that can be seen, read and felt, while bringing them into public discussion?

The research unfolds through two interconnected dimensions: personal experience and public space.  The first examines individual experiences of being in-between. Through visual poetry, material experimentation, and publication design, it translates uncertainty and shifting senses of belonging into visual language.

The second extends the research into urban space, using Glasgow Charing Cross Station as the main site of observation. Through field research, photography, on-site documentation, and text collection, it investigates how stations, passageways, boundaries, and everyday movement form changing transitional spaces, while examining relationships between spatial structures, identity, perception and belonging.

The project adopts practice-led research as its core methodology, treating design making as a process of observation, experimentation, reflection, and knowledge production. It has developed into cross-media outcomes including visual poetry, experimental publications, newspapers, posters, and installations.
